Hornady Straight OAL (Overall Length) Gauge

The Lock-N-Load Overall Length (O.A.L) Gauge is used in conjunction with a threaded (calibre specific) Modified Case to determine the overall length between the chamber and rifling lands. This enables you to calculate the ideal seating depth for the bullet.

To use the OAL Gauge Thread the appropriate case into the OAL Gauge, insert your desired bullet deep into the case neck, insert the gauge, modified case (with bullet) into the rifle chamber then slide the plunger at the back of the gauge until you feel the bullet contact with rifling. Lock the plunger in place with the thumb screw then remove the gauge. Measure the maximum overall length of the cartridge using calipers.

We usually recommend seating the bullet around 30 thousandths of an inch (0.03") from the rifling lands for best accuracy. For all bolt action and single-shot rifles.
