Hornady have developed the bullet comparator because measuring cartridge lengths across the bullet tip is not a reliable or repeatable method. The Hornady Comparator measures from the 'ogive' of the bullet to provide a precise and consistent measurement for your rounds. Using the comparator will allow you to find the correct seating depth of any bullet regardless of length and shape because you are basing the measurement on the 'ogive' rather then bullet tip.

It is also often used for checking the consistency of your bullet seating when reloading and checking the suitability of factory ammunition for you rifle.
